5 Life Saving Tips when Shopping for Jeans

Shopping for jeans can be tricky! Today I wanted to share with you my 5 life saving tips when shopping for jeans. Jeans are my go-to pair of bottoms for every day, thus having a pair that lasts, looks great and is comfortable is pretty important to me. Simply check through my outfit index and see how many outfits include a pair of jeans (crazy right). Plus, us men don’t have a huge selection of bottoms so denim jeans are my primary area of interest.

01. EXPERIMENT

When I first started buying jeans to express my style, I simply stuck to what I thought was the “it jean”. At this particular time period, that was the 511 Levi Skinny Jean. As a grown”ish” man, I now take into consideration so many different kinds of washes, fits and lengths. Shopping for denim online can be a bit tricky so my first tip is to make sure to experiment with different or new cuts in store. I am not saying you have to purchase in store but this allows you to see the new silhouette or color before making the splurge online. I think experimentation is the best part about fashion thus I keep this in mind when i’m looking for jeans (or any article or clothing for that matter).

02. LENGTH ISN’T EVERYTHING

Keep in mind that you can get your jeans hemmed for just a few dollars! I personally passed up so many incredible options because they were too long. My size is a 30/30 and when I find jeans that are a 30/32 I typically don’t even give them a try. I then realized I actually prefer the fit of a 30/32 in the thigh area a bit more than a 30/30. Since my legs are small, having a bit of additional fabric on the leg gives the illusion of a bigger leg. Getting that additional 2″ cut off and hemmed is a breeze. Keep this in mind next time your out shopping. (You can also check out my pant cuffing video for different cuffing techniques)

The back is just as important as the front. When I bought my first pair of designer denim, I really focused on how the jeans looked from the front and never really paid attention to the back. One day I caught a glimpse and couldn’t believe I had such a tiny looking ass (Not saying I have a Nicki Minaj butt)… Honestly though, it was mainly the pocket-size in comparison to my size. The pockets were so huge that they took up the entire back of the pant. Making sure that the pocket-size is in proportion to your figure can have a huge impact on your “rear view appeal”. The general rule: The larger the pocket, the smaller your butt looks and the smaller the pocket, the larger your butt looks.

Over the years I have acquired many different pairs of denim. This tip is now the first thing I look at when shopping for new denim. I have the basic washes and cuts that fit me well so now I like to focus of innovative or tending details. Frayed hems, rips and distressing, contrast stitching and so on is what I am talking about. When “boyfriend distressed denim” started to trend, I kept this in mind as my detail i looked for in a new pair of jeans. If their is a specific detail you want, look for this first and then apply the other rules mentioned for your perfect pair of jeans!

Lastly, this is my personal opinion on what everybody should have in their closet in order to have a “perfect” wardrobe. Black skinny jeans are my go-to for everyday life. A nice good quality pair of black jeans (one without rips and one with) can really pair with absolutely any top, jacket or pair of shoes. I also love having a nice pair of washed light blue denim and a pair of true blue denim. Personally, dark wash jeans are not my cup of tea however if you feel comfortable in them, GO FOR IT! Lately, I have also been loving all of the different finishes that designers and fast fashion brands have been releasing. Light acid wash. waxed coatings and leather look denim are amongst my favorite that you should give a try next time your out and about!

I actually never really payed attention to the “rear view appeal” before, that’s a really good tip! I wasn’t a big jeans-lover, up until recently when I bought a new pair of jeans that were actually comfortable (for once), fitted me properly and looked nice! I’ve been looking to buy more pairs ever since, so this is a great post x

I feel like jeans have progressed over the years! I remember all of my girl friends hating jeans and now they all love them! Thanks so much for the wonderful feedback Lina!
